Have you ever been chased by a turkey all because you're on a red garment or your carrying any red colored material? Here is why.
Turkeys do posses this ability to change the color of the skin on their head, especially to express their emotions in different situations. They are capable of changing their head-neck color from red to blue and to white depending on whether they are calm, excited or even when they are in an aggressive mode. This abilities are always mainly possessed by male turkeys.
When a male turkey( also known as a "gobbler turkey" or a simply "Tom") is excited, his head color will change to blue. When in a stressed or an aggressive mode, it head color will change to a very bright red color. And when in a position for mating, it head will look something like a pale or whitish color.
So why do they hate red colors then? To male turkeys, red means aggressiveness and a male turkey could be aggressive if it fellow male or rival male comes to mate with the female turkeys( also known as hen) in his domain, or comes to take over his territory. This behavior is so common in the animal kingdom and for male turkeys, they often get agitated when in position to challenge other rival males and their heads will brighten up it red color. Male turkeys do recognize other males with the red color change of their head and beard( since it only peculiar to only male turkeys). So if a turkey attacks you or chase you when you are on a red garment, it simply means that it getting nervous, believing that you are a rival male that has come to mate with the females, or to take over his territory. So he simply mistakes red color for a rival male and then goes after it.
